“Dismembered” La Familia…Who Fills the Power Vacuum?

The government has done two things well thus far. First, the government has  aggressively attacked the organization and reduced down to disorganized disparate criminal groups.

The second thing the Mexican government has done well over the last few weeks is to control the narrative. The government’s actions are dominating the media. While these successes are very good, perspective must be maintained.

Now that the government has gained some positive momentum in their campaign against the cartels, that momentum, success, needs to be both sustained and continuously exploited.

La Familia became popular with local Mexicans because of the voids they filled in society in terms of belonging, jobs, economy and a perception of ideals…morbid/distorted as they are. If the Mexican government does not fill this void with something better, this
reported victory will be short-lived until another more violent and/or organized entity steps in e.g. los Zetas for example.
